フラワーオブライフとは、円が規則正しく重なってできた幾何学模様。
古くから生命や調和、つながりを表すシンボルとして親しまれています。
We have completed a new Mizuhiki art piece inspired by the “Flower of Life.”
The Flower of Life is a geometric pattern made up of evenly overlapping circles.
It has long been known as a symbol of life, harmony, and connection.
制作のきっかけ
始まりは、昨年12月24日にいただいたクリスマスラッピングのご依頼でした。
ラッピングをしながらものづくりのお話をしている中で、お客様から
「水引で、これは作れる？」
と見せていただいたのが、フラワーオブライフの画像でした。
「作れないことはないですが、この重なり方は水引にはあまり向いていません。それに、水引でフラワーオブライフを作られている方は見たことがありません。」
そうお伝えすると、お客様が笑顔でひと言。
「じゃあさ、作ったら一番になれるじゃん！どう？」
思わず私も笑ってしまいました。
そして「納期も金額も気にしないから、一度作ってみて。」
そんな言葉をいただき、この挑戦が始まりました。
How This Project Began
It all started with a Christmas gift-wrapping request we received on December 24 last year.
While chatting about craftsmanship and handmade creations as we wrapped the gift, our customer showed us an image of the Flower of Life and asked,
“Could you make this with Mizuhiki?”
We replied,
“It might be possible, but this kind of overlapping pattern isn’t really suited to Mizuhiki. And we’ve never seen anyone create the Flower of Life with Mizuhiki before.”
The customer smiled and said,
“Then you could be the first!”
We couldn’t help but laugh.
Then came the words that started this whole challenge:
“Don’t worry about the deadline or the cost. Just give it a try.”
And so, the project began.
構想から約半年
最初の1か月は、フラワーオブライフの構造を理解するところから。
円の重なりや交差を一つひとつ確認しながら、試作を重ねて少しずつ形にしていきました。その後、お客様にご了承いただき、4月に名古屋で開催した作品展へ出展。
作品展終了後にはフレームを改めて選び直し、サイズ変更に合わせてすべてを組み直しました。
さらに四隅ギリギリまで円が途切れないデザインに変更。
一本一本の水引の長さや角度を調整しながら、構想から約半年をかけて
ようやく納得のいく作品が完成しました。
Six Months from Concept to Completion
The first month was spent simply understanding the structure of the Flower of Life.
We carefully studied how each circle overlaps and intersects, creating prototypes and gradually working out how to recreate the pattern using Mizuhiki.
With our customer’s permission, the work was then exhibited at an exhibition held in Nagoya in April.
After the exhibition, we selected a new frame together with the customer. Because the size had changed, the entire piece had to be reconstructed.
We also decided to take the design one step further, extending the circles all the way to the four corners of the frame without breaking the pattern.
Carefully adjusting the length and angle of each individual Mizuhiki cord, we continued refining the piece.
After nearly six months from the initial concept, it was finally complete — a piece we were truly happy with.
